healthcare project
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, part of the Mackenzie Health System, is Canada's first smart hospital and the first net new hospital built in Ontario in more than three decades. The facility covers 1.2 million square feet and stands eleven storeys tall.
To furnish a building this size to one consistent standard, an Internal Standards Committee was established, including medical and nursing practitioners, patients, and health, safety, cleaning and maintenance personnel. The criteria were IPAC, health and safety, materiality and price, and finalising the product standard took a year. The installation then had to happen during COVID-19.
Harkel provided and installed a total of 8,500 furniture pieces, of which only four required replacement due to damage. To install safely during the pandemic, the team divided each of the eleven floors into 88 quadrants, delivered 48 tractor-trailers at night and installed by day with a 60-person crew in PPE and colour-coded, numbered vests so every piece could be tracked to the exact installer.
Featured products included the Coast Glider, Dreme Sleeper, Global Accord, Primacare HT, Primacare Modular and River+ seating.
